Anchor and Ace may be one of Gansbaai's newer arrivals, but it's already carving out a place in the town's dining scene. On a relaxed Sunday visit, we found a menu that balances comfort-food classics with more adventurous flavours, attentive service and a few unexpected standouts – including a vibrant raw vegetable salad and spicy crispy chicken wings that stole the show.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup brings people together in front of screens around the world, Table & Tide explores one of the Overberg's own gathering spaces. La Cantina in Stanford offers hearty Tex-Mex-inspired fare, attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere that encourages you to settle in for the next round.

At the southernmost tip of Africa, where two oceans meet, Needles offers more than just a meal — it’s an experience shaped by place. This is where the warm Indian Ocean meets the cold Atlantic, and where Portuguese navigators once noted that their compass needles pointed true north, giving rise to the name Cabo das Agulhas, or “Cape of Needles.”

A long weekend stop that’s easy to linger over, Black Oystercatcher pairs cool-climate wines with generous, locally sourced platters on a laid-back stoep in Elim. With two distinct tasting flights, shelves of farm-made goods, and views of the quiet road (and occasional landing strip), it’s less about rushing through a tasting and more about settling in for a slow, satisfying afternoon.

A night at Searles in Stanford is as much about the stage as it is about the plate. This intimate dinner-and-theatre spot pairs familiar “huiskos” — think bobotie, curries and peppermint crisp tart — with live performances that pull you in.

Napier comes alive this Freedom Day long weekend as the sixth Creative Napier Art Route unfolds from 25 to 27 April. With ten open studio venues, a mix of local and guest artists, live music, workshops and pop-up food experiences, visitors can explore the village at their own pace while moving between ceramics, painting, sculpture and more.

When the Overberg winter settles in—wind pushing at the windows, rain falling steadily, and the air turning just sharp enough to send everyone indoors—the fire becomes the centre of the home. And once it’s lit, there’s really only one thing to do: put a potjie on. Built from local flavours—Overberg wine, fragrant African rosemary, sweet apricots and freshly grown vegetables—this slow-cooked dish delivers deep, rich comfort after hours on the coals. Served with warm, freshly baked bread, it’s winter done properly.

White Shark House in Kleinbaai is a distinctive Overberg dining spot where marine heritage meets a contemporary, health-conscious menu. With seaweed and fynbos-inspired dishes, atmospheric interiors anchored by a whale skeleton, and a mix of local and international flavours, it offers a memorable coastal dining experience beyond its well-known boat trip roots.

Just off the N2 in Grabouw, Peregrine Farm Stall has quietly evolved from a legendary padkos stop into a full destination in its own right. What began with apples sold from the farm in the 1960s is now a layered experience of award-winning pies, an in-house bakery, a locally rooted café and a carefully curated collection of independent vendors — from fresh Elgin juices and handcrafted ice cream to antiques, books, fashion and plants. It’s not just somewhere to pull over. This KFM Best of the Cape winner is where the road slows down on purpose.

There’s something quietly perfect about a road trip moment like this — parked off somewhere scenic, coffee in one hand, pie in the other, and a dashboard turned tasting table. With flaky pastries lined up like edible souvenirs from the journey and the open road stretching ahead, it captures the simple joy of travelling slowly: stopping often, tasting generously, and letting good food become part of the landscape.
