Hermanus FynArts returns from 6 to 14 June with a renewed focus on the arts, a new festival director, and a packed programme of music, books, sculpture, theatre, food and wine. From the internationally acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir to thought-provoking News24 discussions, public art installations and immersive culinary experiences, this year’s festival promises nine winter days of creativity, conversation and culture across Hermanus.

At the southernmost tip of Africa, where two oceans meet, Needles offers more than just a meal — it’s an experience shaped by place. This is where the warm Indian Ocean meets the cold Atlantic, and where Portuguese navigators once noted that their compass needles pointed true north, giving rise to the name Cabo das Agulhas, or “Cape of Needles.”

Creative Napier returned with a refreshed format, bringing together 23 artists across nine venues in a celebration of art, nature and community. From immersive exhibitions to workshops and live performances, this year’s route highlighted the depth of creative talent in the Overberg — and the stories behind the work.

A long weekend stop that’s easy to linger over, Black Oystercatcher pairs cool-climate wines with generous, locally sourced platters on a laid-back stoep in Elim. With two distinct tasting flights, shelves of farm-made goods, and views of the quiet road (and occasional landing strip), it’s less about rushing through a tasting and more about settling in for a slow, satisfying afternoon.

A night at Searles in Stanford is as much about the stage as it is about the plate. This intimate dinner-and-theatre spot pairs familiar “huiskos” — think bobotie, curries and peppermint crisp tart — with live performances that pull you in.

The City Nature Challenge invites residents from Gansbaai to Cape Town to document local biodiversity from April 24 to 27, 2026. Participants can use the iNaturalist app to record diverse species, contributing to global databases that aid conservation efforts. This initiative encourages exploration and appreciation of nature during the Freedom Day weekend.

Napier comes alive this Freedom Day long weekend as the sixth Creative Napier Art Route unfolds from 25 to 27 April. With ten open studio venues, a mix of local and guest artists, live music, workshops and pop-up food experiences, visitors can explore the village at their own pace while moving between ceramics, painting, sculpture and more.

When the Overberg winter settles in—wind pushing at the windows, rain falling steadily, and the air turning just sharp enough to send everyone indoors—the fire becomes the centre of the home. And once it’s lit, there’s really only one thing to do: put a potjie on. Built from local flavours—Overberg wine, fragrant African rosemary, sweet apricots and freshly grown vegetables—this slow-cooked dish delivers deep, rich comfort after hours on the coals. Served with warm, freshly baked bread, it’s winter done properly.

Just over two hours from Cape Town, Swellendam is the kind of place that invites you to slow down — but never leaves you bored. Perhaps it’s the way the road opens up as you leave Cape Town behind, trading traffic for farmland, mountains and sky. Or the fact that, in just over two hours, you arrive somewhere that feels entirely removed from urgency.

White Shark House in Kleinbaai is a distinctive Overberg dining spot where marine heritage meets a contemporary, health-conscious menu. With seaweed and fynbos-inspired dishes, atmospheric interiors anchored by a whale skeleton, and a mix of local and international flavours, it offers a memorable coastal dining experience beyond its well-known boat trip roots.
