A page dedicated to posts about the Fauna and Flora of the Overberg

A few days ago, the sky over the Overstrand turned a shade of grey we won’t soon forget. The Cut-off Low of May 2026 brought a relentless force that tested the very foundations of our region.

The City Nature Challenge invites residents from Gansbaai to Cape Town to document local biodiversity from April 24 to 27, 2026. Participants can use the iNaturalist app to record diverse species, contributing to global databases that aid conservation efforts. This initiative encourages exploration and appreciation of nature during the Freedom Day weekend.

Fernkloof Nature Reserve sits above Hermanus like an archive—layered, precise, and quietly alive with process. As part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest yet most diverse of the world’s six floral kingdoms, nothing here feels hurried. The work unfolds in its own time, shaped by the long memory of fynbos, a system containing over 9,000 species, nearly 70% of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

There’s a mountain that rises steeply behind Groeneweide Farm near Franskraal, just outside Gansbaai. Most people know the farm for its weekly Parkrun – runners and walkers gathering early on Saturday mornings among the fields and coastal fynbos.

The Overberg region of the Western Cape is one of South Africa’s most important agricultural landscapes — a mosaic of rolling hills, fertile plains, and expansive grain fields that supply a significant portion of the country’s wheat and other cereals.

After days of sustained firefighting across the Overberg, the fires that threatened towns, farms and coastline are beginning to recede. This is not an ending, and not quite relief—more a hard-won pause. There is still no rain in sight.

The Pearly Beach fire escalated on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, with officials warning that strong winds are continuing to push the fire toward the entrance of Pearly Beach. In the latest municipal update issued just after midday, the fire was reported to have jumped the R43, a development that can rapidly change fire behaviour and increase the risk to nearby settled areas.

Harold Porter Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay is packed with December highlights: a 5km night run, candlelit carols, a craft beer festival, a local art exhibition and a summer concert — all set amid fynbos, sea air and mountain views.

South Africa’s new National Biodiversity Assessment reveals both the pressures and the promise of our natural world — and nowhere is this more visible than in the Overberg. From fynbos slopes to whale-rich coastlines, the region reflects the challenges and successes highlighted in the report.

Driving past a fire near Gansbaai it was clear the flames stretched from the private lands near Grootbos Private Nature Reserve right across the Walker Bay Nature Reserve and across the R43 which authorities shut down.
