There are days on the Hermanus cliff path when Walker Bay feels almost close enough to touch. Our latest Table and Tide outing was one of those – a 360° walk from Mossel River to Kraal Rock, filmed with the Hermanus Botanical Society.

The Overberg has always been a place of quiet botanical miracles — but the last few weeks have turned that quiet into a joyful roar across the Hermanus Botanical Society WhatsApp groups.

This year, from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 October, Greyton hosted its much-loved Rose and Garden Fair — a weekend that transformed the village into a sensory celebration of colour, fragrance, and community spirit.

At the edge of Africa’s southernmost forest, the Platbos Reforestation Project is bringing new life to an ancient landscape. Run by the Platbos Conservation Trust in partnership with organisations such as Greenpop, the project aims to replant degraded land bordering the forest with indigenous trees grown in the Platbos Tree Nursery.

The 2025 Hermanus Botanical Society Flower Show, held from 26–28 September at Fernkloof Nature Reserve, celebrated the theme “Seed Secrets” with over 350 indigenous floral displays highlighting the beauty and diversity of the fynbos ecosystem.

Beekeeping in the Overberg has deep roots. The word Heuning — meaning honey in Afrikaans — appears in local place names like Heuningklip and Heuningberg, a clue to the wild honeybee colonies that once nested in the cliffs and rock crevices of the region.

The Stanford in Bloom Festival, held from September 10 to 24, 2025, celebrated gardening and biodiversity through exhibitions, workshops, and a vibrant market. The event featured a Chelsea Flower Show display, enhancing Stanford's community spirit and supporting local conservation efforts. Thousands attended.
