Into the Ancient Heart of Platbos: Africa’s Southernmost Forest

Tucked between Gansbaai and Hermanus, where fynbos meets sea breeze, lies Platbos Forest — Africa’s southernmost indigenous forest and one of the rarest ecosystems in the Western Cape. Though small in scale, it is immense in significance: a living remnant of the Lowland Afrotemperate forest that once stretched across the region, now reduced to less than 0.05% of the province’s landscape.

An Ode to Platbos

The road to the forest is surprisingly accessible, winding through farmland and fynbos before dipping into the shaded cool of Platbos. There’s a small parking area at the Info Hut, where you can collect your walking permit, map, and information about the forest reserve and its nursery. From there, the trails begin — clearly marked and easy to follow, winding beneath an emerald canopy alive with birdcall.

The Walks: Four Interlinked Circles

Platbos offers four adjoining circular routes, each linking seamlessly to the next, allowing you to wander for an hour or an afternoon. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dappled with light and whispering leaves. Along the way, trees are thoughtfully labelled, helping visitors recognise species like stinkwood, white pear, hard pear, milkwood, and wild olive — many of them centuries old. At the end of Route Two, stand quietly before a magnificent Milkwood tree, estimated to be over a thousand years old. Its gnarled trunk twists skyward, roots anchored deep in the same soil that has sustained generations of life. Stillness and Sound

The air hums with the murmur of bees (there are warning signs at key points) and the melodic calls of robins, woodpeckers, and flycatchers. Visitors are encouraged to walk in silence, listening to the natural rhythms that define the forest’s fragile balance.

Platbos has no streams or springs to feed it; instead, it survives on morning mists and coastal fog, the trees forming what botanists describe as “nutrient islands” that share moisture and protect one another. It is a remarkable act of ecologicacollaboration — one that mirrors the human effort now dedicated to conserving it.

The Labyrinth and the Light

At the end of Route Three, just before Route Four begins, lies a labyrinth made of mother-of-pearl seashells. It’s a space for quiet reflection — a gentle invitation to pause, breathe, and connect. Beyond the trees, occasional openings in the canopy allow you to look out across the rolling landscape — a patchwork of fynbos, farmland, and sea — reminding you of how much has changed, and how precious this remaining forest truly is.

A Living Sanctuary

Managed by the Platbos Conservation Trust, the forest is part of an ongoing effort to restore degraded land, remove alien vegetation, and replant indigenous trees. Visitors directly support this work through trail fees and donations. The adjoining Platbos Nursery propagates forest species used for reforestation — more than tens of thousands of trees have already been planted through volunteer and partner programmes.

Platbos is also home to a variety of wildlife: bushbuck, porcupine, caracal, and countless bird species. The forest’s tranquillity is protected — no pets are allowed, and visitors are asked to tread lightly, leaving nothing but footprints and taking away only a deeper sense of awe.
