The Platbos Reforestation Project

Beneath Platbos’ quiet canopy lies one of the Western Cape’s most hopeful conservation stories — the Platbos Reforestation Project, a long-term initiative to restore and expand Africa’s southernmost forest.

Run by the Platbos Conservation Trust in partnership with organisations such as Greenpop, the project aims to replant degraded land bordering the forest with indigenous trees grown in the Platbos Tree Nursery. These are not just any seedlings — they are the offspring of the forest’s own ancient trees, carefully propagated to ensure genetic continuity and ecological resilience.

Since its inception in 2008, volunteers, schools, and community groups have helped to plant tens of thousands of trees, transforming previously alien-invaded or overgrazed land into thriving young woodland. Each tree represents a small but vital step in restoring the lowland forest ecosystem — one of the rarest in the Western Cape.

The reforestation work is about more than planting trees; it’s about healing a landscape. Every seedling adds to the forest’s ability to absorb carbon, support pollinators, and provide a home for wildlife. The project also maintains vital firebreaks, removes alien invasive species, and protects existing forest through ongoing management and monitoring.
