As the 2026 FIFA World Cup brings people together in front of screens around the world, Table & Tide explores one of the Overberg's own gathering spaces. La Cantina in Stanford offers hearty Tex-Mex-inspired fare, attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere that encourages you to settle in for the next round.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup unfolds across Mexico, Canada and the United States from 11 June to 19 July, it’s the perfect excuse to discover the Overberg’s gathering places – where good food, warm hospitality and shared moments matter as much as the final score.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicking off this week – hosts Mexico taking on South Africa in the opening fixture – it feels fitting to seek out a venue that can deliver both atmosphere and comfort. On a recent evening in Stanford, a group of us found ourselves at La Cantina, the Mexican-inspired restaurant on the village’s main road, wondering whether it might just become the Overberg’s unofficial match-day headquarters.

The signs were promising from the outset. Television screens were positioned for easy viewing, Mexican decorations brightened the space, and Frida Kahlo watched over proceedings from the walls. Outside, patio heaters took the edge off the winter chill, while staff offered blankets to diners lingering over their meals – a thoughtful touch that speaks to the restaurant’s easy hospitality.

We visited as a group, which meant the opportunity to sample a good cross-section of the menu. Only one person opted for a starter: the Hot Chilli Poppers. Three breadcrumb-coated jalapeños arrived with a creamy dipping sauce. The coating delivered a satisfying crunch and the cheese filling provided the expected richness. Less successful were the peppers themselves, which remained firmer than anticipated. Those who enjoy more bite may not mind, but others might prefer a softer texture.

Around the table, the Beef Tacos quickly emerged as the favourite. The diner who ordered them remarked that next time they would choose the larger portion – not because the serving was inadequate, but because the flavours made them want more. In a review full of different dishes and opinions, this was the one plate that inspired immediate plans for a return order.
The ladies-sized beef nachos challenged assumptions about smaller portions. Topped with melted cheese, sour cream and accompanied by guacamole, they proved substantial enough to satisfy a healthy appetite. Three house sauces were brought to the table, encouraging everyone to customise their meals according to taste.
The Mex Smash Burger demonstrated the kitchen’s willingness to play with familiar formats. Combining a burger patty with refried beans, cheese and salad, it was hearty without becoming unwieldy. The accompanying fries deserve special mention. Crisp on the outside, fluffy within and properly seasoned, they were among the most consistently praised elements of the meal.
A Mex Pizza topped with cheese and tomato offered a straightforward option for those seeking something less adventurous, while the chicken tenders with chips turned out to be far more substantial than expected. This wasn’t a token children’s meal masquerading on the main menu but a generous adult portion. We requested additional guacamole to accompany it – a decision that no one around the table regretted.

The service throughout the evening was attentive without feeling intrusive. Requests for extra accompaniments were met promptly, empty glasses didn’t sit unnoticed for long, and staff appeared genuinely invested in ensuring guests were comfortable. It contributed to a relaxed atmosphere that encouraged people to stay for another drink, another conversation, perhaps even another half of football.
La Cantina isn’t trying to be a destination for purists seeking regional Mexican cooking. What it offers instead is something arguably more valuable in a small Overberg village: a welcoming, convivial space where groups can gather over generous portions of crowd-pleasing food.
Would I return? Yes. Particularly on a match day, when the combination of screens, tequila, hearty food and warm hospitality is likely to come into its own. This is the sort of place where locals and visitors alike can settle in for the evening, cheer on their team and leave feeling well looked after.
