White Shark House in Kleinbaai Serves Ocean-Inspired Plates with an Overberg Twist

White Shark House in Kleinbaai is a distinctive Overberg dining spot where marine heritage meets a contemporary, health-conscious menu. With seaweed and fynbos-inspired dishes, atmospheric interiors anchored by a whale skeleton, and a mix of local and international flavours, it offers a memorable coastal dining experience beyond its well-known boat trip roots.

Just above the harbour in Kleinbaai, the White Shark House — home of Marine Dynamics — feels unmistakably rooted in place. A whale skeleton hangs dramatically from the ceiling, maritime artefacts line the walls, and large bunches of proteas remind you that you are firmly in the Overberg. The interior mixes nautical heritage with art: South African paintings, warm lighting and a fireplace create a space that feels both atmospheric and welcoming.

For many visitors, White Shark House is familiar as the place where coffee and pastries are served before boat trips, and where soup and a roll warms passengers afterwards. But the restaurant alongside has evolved into a full dining venue with a surprisingly ambitious menu.

A menu shaped by ocean and fynbos

The kitchen leans toward health-conscious cooking with a strong presence of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Menu items are clearly marked when they include seaweed or fynbos ingredients, a thoughtful nod to the local marine and botanical landscape. The breakfast offering is extensive, but we arrived for dinner on a busy Sunday evening when the room was lively with a mix of locals and tourists.

Starters that set the tone

We began with two starters that immediately showed the kitchen’s intention to play with flavour and texture.

The smoked trout tartare arrived delicately plated with a crisp potato triangle, sea lettuce dust and a Cape dill crème fraîche. The balance worked well — fresh, lightly smoky fish lifted by the herbal cream and the subtle salinity of the sea lettuce.

Alongside it, the warm fig, honeybush and goat’s cheese phyllo parcels ticked several boxes at once: seasonal, fynbos-inspired and vegetarian. The phyllo pastry was crisp and golden, giving way to smooth, tangy goat’s cheese and sweet fig notes. Toasted pecans added a welcome crunch, and the white wine and sea lettuce emulsion tied the dish together with a gentle coastal brightness.

Mixed fortunes with the mains

For the main course, I chose the lentil, kelp and chilli bowl served with flatbread. The menu promised garlic oyster sauce, dill and a savoury butter quenelle, suggesting a dish rich in depth and umami. What arrived, however, felt more restrained — a bowl of lentils with firm strips of kelp and less of the layered flavour expected from the description.

At the same time, the mussels in cream sauce proved far more satisfying. Served with herbed bruschetta for dipping, the dish delivered exactly what you want from a classic bowl of mussels: a fragrant and creamy sauce and shellfish cooked just right.

Ending on a high note

Dessert brought the meal back into balance. We shared the Chocolate Delice — a layered plate promising honeycomb, chocolate soil and orange sorbet. It delivered. Rich chocolate elements were lifted by the bright citrus of the sorbet, and the honeycomb added both sweetness and texture. It was the kind of dessert that feels indulgent without being heavy.

A closing flat white rounded things off, giving us a moment to linger before heading back into the Kleinbaai night air.

The bigger picture

White Shark House works best as a destination that blends food with place. The décor celebrates maritime heritage, the menu experiments with seaweed and fynbos ingredients, and the atmosphere reflects Kleinbaai’s unique mix of conservation tourism and coastal living. Service on the evening was attentive despite the full dining room, and the space maintained a relaxed energy throughout.

Would we return?

Yes. Not every dish hit the heights promised by the menu descriptions, but enough did to make us curious about the rest of the offerings. With such a broad menu — and a setting that captures the spirit of the Overberg — it’s a place worth returning to explore further.
