Just off the N2 in Grabouw, Peregrine Farm Stall has quietly evolved from a legendary padkos stop into a full destination in its own right. What began with apples sold from the farm in the 1960s is now a layered experience of award-winning pies, an in-house bakery, a locally rooted café and a carefully curated collection of independent vendors — from fresh Elgin juices and handcrafted ice cream to antiques, books, fashion and plants. It’s not just somewhere to pull over. This KFM Best of the Cape winner is where the road slows down on purpose.

More Than a Farm Stall, More Than a Market
If you’ve driven the N2 through Grabouw, you’ve seen it: cars slowing down instinctively, indicators flicking on, a quiet understanding that this is where you pull over.
You might tell yourself you’re stopping for padkos. A pie. A coffee. A quick leg stretch before Sir Lowry’s Pass.
Here’s the truth: Peregrine Farm Stall is not a quick stop. It’s a destination.

What began in the early 1960s with Kenneth Truter selling freshly picked apples from this very farm became officially established in 1966. The current Knysna timber structure, built in 1981, gave the farm stall permanence and warmth — a home sturdy enough to grow into something much bigger than fruit crates and passing trade.
Over the years, shelves filled with jams, preserves and pantry staples. In 1998, the Red Tractor Café opened. Between 1999 and 2000, the first pies emerged from the ovens — flaky, golden and generously filled. They quickly became ritual.
After a fire in 2014 destroyed the café, Peregrine rebuilt and reopened in 2015 with a new café space. In 2018, a full in-house bakery was launched. Today, a team of 30 bakers produces artisanal breads, pastries and sweet treats daily — crusty loaves, buttery croissants, rusks, tarts and those famous pies that have fuelled countless Western Cape road trips.
It’s heritage without nostalgia. Growth without losing its rural grounding.
A celebration of independent vendors
Step beyond the bakery counters and you realise Peregrine has quietly become a small marketplace — a cluster of independent vendors that invite you to wander rather than rush.
At Elgin Pure, freshly pressed fruit juices reflect the orchards that surround Grabouw — crisp apple blends and seasonal combinations bottled straight from the valley.

Tucked inside is Liberty Books (above), a second-hand bookshop so well curated you could lose an hour without noticing. Travel writing, novels, art books, old cookbooks — it’s less bargain bin, more literary treasure hunt.
Gaia’s Nursery softens the retail space with indoor and outdoor plants — succulents, leafy greens and seasonal blooms that make you consider rearranging your boot to fit one more pot.

At Ruby Rose, handcrafted jewellery and ceramic tableware lean into earthy tones and organic shapes — pieces that feel considered rather than commercial.
The creative and the curious
There’s a sense of discovery threaded through the rest of the space.
The Barnhouse Antique Shop offers an eclectic collection of vintage pieces — furniture, curiosities, objects from another era that make you pause and imagine their previous lives.
Shabby Fufu brings Turkish and Middle Eastern-inspired fashion into the fold — flowing fabrics, bold patterns and pieces that feel equal parts comfortable and expressive.

At Crafted Bliss, you’ll find quirky gifts and unusual crafts — the kind of items that don’t feel mass-produced.
Antjie’s stocks handcrafted cosmetic products, adding a small-batch, natural touch to the mix.
Food, but not only pie
Peregrine’s food offering stretches well beyond its famous pastry.
The café menu is expansive and rooted in locally sourced produce — breakfasts worth arriving early for, generous lunches and good coffee that justifies the detour.
There’s also Poke & Sushi @ Peregrine, serving vibrant bowls and sushi made with locally sourced ingredients — a contemporary addition that feels surprisingly at home here.
The Countryside Ice Cream Cart offers handcrafted flavours that tempt children and adults alike — especially when added to pancakes and drizzled with syrup.

The Health Shop stocks wellness essentials, including cannabis-based products, reflecting how the modern farm stall has evolved with its customers.
And yes, there’s even a washbay in the parking lot. We once saw a Rolls-Royce being cleaned there — which tells you something about how long people are prepared to linger.
