A Relaxed Breakfast at Dutchies on Grotto Beach

A long-standing favourite in the Overberg, Hermanus' Dutchies is known for generous breakfasts, well-made classics and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. It’s the kind of place people return to for familiar flavours, good portions and an easy start to the day.

Set right on the edge of Grotto Beach, Dutchies is the kind of place where the view does much of the talking. With ocean and mountain vistas stretching in opposite directions, it offers a front-row seat to one of Hermanus’s most popular beaches. Tables spill out beneath a Milkwood tree, and the constant presence of sea air, shifting light and passing walkers creates a sense of movement that feels inseparable from the meal itself. This is not a hushed, rarefied dining room, but a lively coastal restaurant designed for long breakfasts, families, and people who want to stay awhile.

The menu reflects that easy-going ambition. Breakfast options range widely — from fruit bowls and smoothies to classic egg dishes and Dutch specialities — and the overall tone is generous rather than refined. Dutchies clearly aims to cater to many appetites at once, leaning into familiarity, choice and comfort rather than culinary risk.

Arriving early, watching it fill

We arrived just after breakfast service had begun, when the car park was still half-empty and the tables hadn’t yet filled. That calm didn’t last long. Within an hour, the space had transformed into a briskly trading holiday restaurant, with cars queuing, tables turning and staff moving steadily between orders. Grotto Beach gets busy during peak periods, and Dutchies mirrors that rhythm. Booking ahead — or arriving early, as we did — makes a noticeable difference to how relaxed the experience feels.

Service handled the growing crowd well. Staff were friendly, efficient and unfazed by the pace, striking a good balance between attentiveness and letting diners settle in without being rushed.

Drinks and first impressions

We started with drinks, including a rooibos and honey smoothie. It was smooth and pleasant, though more filling than expected — essentially banana-forward, with the rooibos and honey adding warmth rather than leading the flavour. Enjoyable, but worth noting if you’re pairing it with a hearty breakfast rather than something light.

A cup of foamy coffee sits on a saucer, accompanied by sugar and sweetener packets, olive oil, and a glass of iced drink, with a beach view visible through the window.
Great view, flat white and a Rooibos and honey smoothie to start the morning.

The sea breeze, the sound of conversation rising around us, and the steady flow of plates from the kitchen set the tone: this is a place where food is part of a broader beach-going ritual, not the sole focus of the outing.

What we ordered

The loaded croissant arrived well presented and generously filled with cheese, guacamole, bacon and egg, finished with a green aioli drizzle. The croissant itself was a highlight — crisp on the outside with a soft, fluffy interior that held the fillings comfortably. The bacon was nicely crisp, adding welcome texture and savoury depth. While the avocado was on the mild side, the cheese brought richness to the dish, and a little extra warmth would have helped everything melt together even more seamlessly. Overall, it’s a hearty, satisfying choice that showcases the kitchen’s strengths.

The salmon eggs Benedict was equally generous and beautifully assembled, with a substantial portion and a finishing drizzle of olive oil. The components were well prepared and indulgent, making it a good option for those wanting a more filling breakfast or brunch. For some palates, a lighter or sharper element could lift the richness, but as served it’s a comforting, robust dish that will appeal to anyone looking for a substantial start to the day.

Menu breadth and who it suits

Looking around at neighbouring tables, it’s clear that choice is one of Dutchies’ main appeals. The breakfast menu covers a wide range: seasonal fruit bowls, classic egg-and-bacon plates, bacon, ham or salmon eggs Benedict, and three-egg omelettes that can be customised. There are distinctly Dutch offerings too, including the “Uitsmijter” — three slices of bread topped with gypsy ham, three eggs and melted cheese — alongside sweet options like “Wentelteefjies”, a French toast with apple.

Smoothies range from indulgent to health-focused, including a classic green made with banana, baby spinach, yoghurt, almond milk and honey, and there are several hot breakfast choices designed for those who want something more substantial.

This is good family food in a setting that encourages lingering. It suits holidaymakers, beach walkers, groups and families more than diners seeking precision or restraint. Portions are generous, and value for money feels fair when you factor in both the quantity and the location.

The takeaway

Dutchies works best when approached on its own terms: order simply, embrace the setting, and allow time for the space to do what it does best. I would return — particularly on a quieter morning — for an unfussy breakfast with a view and the sense of being firmly embedded in the rhythm of Grotto Beach.
