Ou Meul in Stanford is a much-loved Overberg stop for hearty breakfasts, legendary venison and pepper steak pies, flaky pastries and strong coffee. Set just off the R43, it’s the kind of dependable bakery and café where road trips pause, locals gather and comfort food is done properly.

Where the Overberg pulls in for coffee and comfort
Anyone in the Overberg will tell you that Ou Meul is where you stop for coffee, pies and solid artisanal fare from the region. In Stanford, just off the R43, the bakery and café carries that reputation with ease. The scent of fresh bread drifts from inside, the deli shelves are stocked with local goods and wines, and the outdoor tables fill steadily with travellers and locals alike.
It feels less like a trendy café and more like a dependable institution — somewhere woven into the rhythm of road trips and weekend routines.
We pulled in during a journey along the R43, looking for a hearty breakfast and good coffee. The outdoor seating was shaded and relaxed, with children playing nearby but never loudly enough to disrupt conversation. It struck a pleasant balance: lively but not chaotic.
Before even thinking about breakfast, there’s the pull of the bakery counter. We already have our favourites — venison pie, pepper steak pie, flaky croissants and the rich indulgence of millionaire shortbread — which makes choosing something different a small internal negotiation.

The homemade juices come well recommended, and it’s easy to see why. Options like pineapple and lemon iced tea, lemonade, and strawberry and mint iced tea offer refreshing alternatives to coffee.
I chose the green juice — cucumber, mint and apple — which was clean, crisp and genuinely refreshing rather than overly sweet. Alongside this, cappuccinos and coffee later in the meal were strong and well made, rounding things off exactly as a proper breakfast stop should.

The smashed avocado toast came on sourdough, topped with poached eggs, parmesan, sesame seeds and chilli flakes. The sourdough held its structure, the eggs were properly poached, and the parmesan added depth without overpowering the freshness of the avocado. It’s a familiar dish, but here it felt thoughtfully assembled rather than formulaic.

The crispy bacon Benedict paired bacon, poached egg, blanched spinach and hollandaise sauce. The bacon delivered on crispness, the spinach added balance, and the hollandaise was rich without becoming heavy. It’s a satisfying plate that sits comfortably in Ou Meul’s repertoire.

The Full Monty croissant was indulgent in the best way — freshly baked, filled with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, mozzarella, Dijon mayo and avocado. The croissant itself was light and flaky, holding the generous filling without collapsing. It’s the kind of breakfast that feels celebratory rather than routine.
Ou Meul’s strength lies in its breadth. The bakery and café offers a large selection of vegetarian and vegan options, and the deli shelves are stocked with local products, including wines that make it tempting to leave with more than you intended. Even if you’re not staying for a full meal, it’s well worth stopping in for takeaway pies, pastries or coffee.
Ou Meul in Stanford suits road-trippers, families, early risers and anyone who values dependable, well-made comfort food. It’s not about reinvention; it’s about consistency and regional pride. Whether you’re craving a venison pie or a generous breakfast plate, it delivers reliably.
Would we stop again? Without hesitation. In the Overberg, Ou Meul isn’t just a café — it’s part of the journey.
