A Rare Breadth of Vegan and Vegetarian Options
Tucked into a leafy courtyard off Harbour Road in Kleinmond, Bistro 14 feels gently removed from the buzz of the traffic. A small waterfall trickles in the centre, fish move lazily in a pond, and dogs settle under tables while their owners linger over lunch. It’s an inviting space — relaxed, green and quietly sociable — and on a busy Saturday the courtyard hums with conversation. Having arrived on strong recommendations, expectations were understandably high.
The setting does much of the immediate work. There’s something grounding about water, shade and the low murmur of a full courtyard. It feels like a place designed for slow lunches and second rounds.
Arriving for a busy Saturday lunch
We visited just before the peak of Saturday lunch service, though the courtyard was filling up. The menu offers a notably wide selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes — more variety than you often see — alongside a smaller but thoughtful range of meat options. Breakfast is served until noon, which broadens the appeal further.
Drinks came first. I ordered the Green Goddess, fresh and bright, while my partner opted for a Hero non-alcoholic beer. There’s a good range of hot and cold options.
What we ordered
For food, I chose the Wild Mushroom on Toast — roasted mushrooms with onion and parmesan on ciabatta. The mushrooms were substantial and well prepared, earthy and generous in portion. The roast onion added sweetness, and the parmesan brought creamy salt and depth. It felt like a comforting, well-balanced plate, suitable as either a late breakfast or light lunch.
My partner ordered the Albondigas which are Spanish-style meatballs in smoky tomato sauce. The sauce could have had a deeper flavour and the portion felt slightly restrained compared to the mushrooms. The dish was enjoyable, but less robust than expected given the setting and recommendation.
Service and pacing
Service on the day was friendly but slow. With the courtyard full, timing stretched longer than we’d anticipated, and we began to doubt whether there would be space for another course. In the end, we ordered flat whites as takeaways to help speed things along. It’s worth noting that on busy weekends, patience may be required.
That said, the menu is interesting enough to warrant a return visit. There are several dishes we’d happily try next time, particularly from the vegetarian selection.
Beyond the plate
One of the pleasures of Bistro 14 is its proximity to other Kleinmond gems. The harbour is a short stroll down the road, making this an easy stop before or after a walk along the water. Next door, the ceramics of Corinne de Haas are worth taking time to browse — beautifully crafted pieces that complement the courtyard’s calm aesthetic. And there are two book stores within walking distance.
Who it’s for
Bistro 14 suits diners who appreciate plant-forward menus, relaxed outdoor spaces and dog-friendly settings. It’s a good option for couples, small groups and anyone wanting something a little different from standard seaside fare. The breadth of vegetarian and vegan options is a particular strength.
Would we return? Yes — perhaps on a quieter weekday, with more time to explore the menu fully. Bistro 14’s atmosphere and ambition make it worth another visit, even if this particular lunch didn’t entirely meet our heightened expectations.
