Stanford’s Zesty Lemon Zings Best Over a Long Lunch

Set just outside Stanford, Zesty Lemon is a laid-back country restaurant known for fresh, vibrant flavours and an atmosphere made for lingering. With shaded outdoor tables, a pond-side setting and easy hospitality, it’s ideal for long lunches, relaxed catch-ups and unhurried afternoons.

Just outside Stanford of the R43, Zesty Lemon sits comfortably within the calm of Landskein Wine Estate. The restaurant opens onto a generous outdoor setting where tables are placed beneath trees and under light cover, overlooking a pond and a scattering of outdoor sculptures. It’s a space that immediately encourages you to slow down — unhurried, open, and gently removed from the town’s busier rhythms. The sense of ease is one of its strongest features, making it well suited to long, sociable lunches.

The setting does much of the work. Whether seated in dappled shade or under cover, there’s a relaxed flow to the space, with enough distance between tables to feel private without being isolated. It’s a venue that feels considered but not styled, and one that invites you to settle in.

Arriving and easing into lunch

We arrived for lunch and chose to skip starters, opting instead to begin with a range of drinks while taking in the setting. Service was attentive and well-paced from the outset, present without hovering — a good match for the relaxed mood of the place.

Our drinks covered a broad spectrum: fresh carrot, apple and ginger juice; a Lemoncello spritz; a Steelworks cocktail; and a chocolate milkshake. The juice was bright and refreshing, with enough ginger to keep it lively. The Lemoncello spritz – light, citrus-led and served with Rosemary – was easy to drink on a hot day. The Steelworks cocktail added a slightly more complex, grown-up note, while the milkshake leaned indulgent, more dessert than refreshment.

Main plates with a relaxed confidence

The Farm House Smashburger arrived first. While it wasn’t a smashburger in the strict sense — it came with two smaller patties rather than a single crisp-edged smash — the burger itself was enjoyable. The patties were well cooked, the avocado added creaminess, and the pickled elements brought welcome balance. It’s a solid, satisfying plate that works well in this setting.

The Springbok carpaccio was more understated. The meat itself was as expected for game — clean and lean — and while the dish would have benefited from a brighter citrus note to lift it further, it remained a pleasant, unfussy plate. A slightly more generous hand with the greens and seasoning would have added depth, but it sat comfortably within the meal rather than detracting from it.

The fillet was the standout among the mains. Cooked medium rare, it arrived with a crusty, salty exterior and a soft, tender interior. The portion was on the smaller side, but the quality and execution were excellent. The chips alongside were well judged — crisp, properly seasoned and satisfying — making this a confident, well-rounded plate.

We also ordered the Cape Malay fish cakes – crumbed hake and trout served with tartar sauce – and rustic chips. Substantive and tasty, they worked well as a sharing option. While the “Cape Malay” label wasn’t strongly reflected in the flavour profile, the dish itself was well prepared and enjoyable.

A dessert worth lingering over

Dessert was where the meal truly peaked. The Pavlova was exceptional — a genuine standout. Beautifully presented, it came topped with fresh berries and grapes, decorated with fresh flowers, and finished with cream that was light, generous and perfectly balanced. The textures and flavours worked effortlessly together, making it both visually striking and deeply satisfying.

The lemon meringue also delivered exactly what it should: sweet-tart lemon curd, crunchy meringue, and a good base, served as a generous slice finished with dried lemon. Together, the desserts brought the meal to a high, memorable close.

Who it’s for and why to return

Zesty Lemon feels rooted in enjoyment rather than performance. It suits families, groups and anyone looking for a calm, open setting where food is taken seriously but served without ceremony. The venue itself is a significant part of the experience, and when the kitchen leans into confident, generous execution — particularly with desserts — it shines.

Would I go back? Yes. For the space, the service, and that Pavlova alone, it’s worth returning. With a lovely setting and moments of real excellence, Zesty Lemon is a relaxed, welcoming stop just outside Stanford that rewards time spent at the table.
