Overberg opens its arms for the holidays as beaches, safety teams and new air routes welcome visitors

The Overberg is officially open for the holidays — with lifeguards back on the beaches, Blue Flags flying high, safety teams on full alert, and new flights bringing visitors into the Western Cape. From pristine coastlines to strengthened festive season security, officials say the region is ready to welcome travellers for a safe, sunny and unforgettable summer.

The Western Cape — and the Overberg in particular — is officially open for the festive season, with beach flags raised, lifeguards on duty, safety plans activated and flights landing in increasing numbers as South Africa enters its peak tourism period.

Across Overstrand beaches, familiar lifeguard teams returned to their posts this week, marking the informal start of summer for locals and visitors. “It’s fantastic to see some familiar faces returning to provide lifeguard services on Overstrand’s beaches, including our Blue Flag beaches, lagoons, and the public swimming pool in Hawston. ,” said Overstrained Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill, announcing daily duty hours from 09:00 to 18:00 throughout the holiday period.

With sea temperatures at a pleasant 17°C and beaches already filling up, authorities urged swimmers to follow safety rules — especially staying between the red and yellow flags.

Beyond the coastline, Overstrand has activated a full Festive Season Operational Plan to manage the annual influx of thousands of holidaymakers. At the official launch in Hermanus, MMC for Municipal Public Safety Andrew Komani said visibility and coordination would be at the heart of this year’s approach.

“That’s why we work closely with neighbourhood watches, SAPS, private security firms, SRAs, provincial traffic, faith-based organisations, Community Policing Forums (CPFs), and emergency ambulance services. We believe in an integrated approach,” Komani said.

The plan includes multi-agency roadblocks, increased patrols, stricter traffic enforcement and enhanced fire and rescue readiness. SAPS Overberg Acting District Commissioner Col. M Mtingane cautioned residents and visitors to stay alert to theft and scams. “We will fine and prosecute those who break the law,” he warned, noting that holiday-related crime often spikes at this time of year.

Speaking at the same event, Overstrand Mayor Ald. Archie Klaas appealed for public cooperation to ensure a safe and enjoyable season for all. ““We want every resident and every visitor in Overstrand to feel safe during this time, and we will not tolerate illegal behaviour in our towns. The festive season is a time to celebrate, but we must celebrate responsibly. We ask our residents to work together with us. Together, we can ensure Overstrand remains a safe place for everyone.”

The Overberg’s beaches have also received a major boost as the Blue Flag season began on 1 December. Kleinmond Main Beach and Grotto Beach in Hermanus once again achieved full Blue Flag status, signalling world-class safety, cleanliness, environmental standards and accessible facilities.

MMC for Community Services Cllr Ronald Nutt praised the teams preparing beaches for the busy weeks ahead. He noted that if all goes well, Grotto Beach will celebrate its 25th uninterrupted Blue Flag season next year — the longest in South Africa — while Kleinmond Main Beach will mark its 20th.

Executive Mayor Klaas emphasised the importance of maintaining these standards: “We depend on the commitment of each individual to keep our beaches in top condition. Let’s work together to ensure we maintain Blue Flag status and continue to offer a safe, sustainable, and enjoyable experience for all visitors.”

Nationally, South Africa’s tourism sector is also strengthening its readiness. Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille convened the National Tourism Safety Forum this week, saying, “Safety is the foundation of tourism growth, and our ability to collaborate effectively determines how well we protect both visitors and the jobs that depend on them.”

At OR Tambo International Airport, 40 new Tourism Monitors have been deployed as part of a broader national safety plan, with the full cohort expected to bolster visitor support throughout the festive period.

Adding to the momentum, Wesgro confirmed a series of new and expanded air routes into Cape Town, improving connectivity from regional and international markets. These include new routes from Hoedspruit and East London, increased flights from Zambia, and South African Airways’ new seasonal Mauritius–Cape Town service launching on 9 December.

With lifeguards on the sand, safety teams on the roads, Blue Flags in full flight and travellers pouring into the Western Cape, the message from the Overberg is clear: the holidays have begun — and the region is ready to welcome the world.
