Later this month the skies above the Overberg will host something a little different. On 21 March 2026, Air Force Base Overberg will open its gates for the first South African Air Force Technology Show, an event designed to showcase the future of aviation, robotics and aerospace technology in South Africa.
The event promises a full day of displays and demonstrations, with gates opening at 11:00 and activities continuing into the evening. Visitors can expect a mix of static exhibits, flying displays and technology demonstrations, ranging from remote-controlled aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles to robotics, artificial intelligence and simulation systems. The programme will conclude dramatically with South Africa’s first legally sanctioned drone swarm demonstration, scheduled for 20:00.
Several civilian organisations involved in the UAV and technology sectors will also participate, highlighting how rapidly aviation is intersecting with fields such as AI, autonomous systems and electric vehicle development.
The show is not only aimed at aviation enthusiasts. A special open day for learners on Friday, 20 March will bring approximately 1,000 school pupils from across the Overberg, Overstrand, Cape Winelands and Breede River Valley to the base. The focus will be on encouraging interest in STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and exposing young people to career opportunities in aviation and robotics.

Air Force Base Overberg, located near Bredasdorp, is one of the most technologically significant installations in the South African Air Force. Established during the late Cold War period, the base is home to the Overberg Test Range, South Africa’s primary missile and aerospace testing facility.
The range, operated in partnership with the defence technology company Denel, stretches out over the Indian Ocean and allows engineers to test missiles, guided weapons and advanced aerospace systems safely over long distances. Over the years it has supported both South African defence programmes and international aerospace testing.
Because of its location and specialised infrastructure, Overberg plays an important role not only in military aviation but also in research, flight testing and the development of emerging aerospace technologies.
Events like the Technology Show also have a wider impact for the region. Organisers expect aviation enthusiasts, drone operators and technology fans to travel to the Overberg for the weekend, bringing visitors into local towns and businesses.
For residents and visitors alike, it promises a rare opportunity to step inside one of South Africa’s most important aviation facilities — and to glimpse the technologies that may shape the future of flight.
